All Saints Church of England Academy

Student Leadership

At All Saints, our student leadership groups play a vital role in shaping school life, strengthening our community, and ensuring that the voices and interests of our students are actively represented. These groups are student-led, empowering young people to take ownership of their ideas, make meaningful contributions, and influence positive change within the school.

Our leadership opportunities include the Prefect Team, the Student Council, Sports Leaders, and House Leaders. Each group serves a unique purpose, but all share a common goal: to support the wellbeing, development, and success of our school community.

Students involved in these teams gain valuable life experience and develop a wide range of skills, including communication, teamwork, organisation, problem-solving, responsibility, and leadership. By taking part, students learn how to work collaboratively, represent their peers, and make decisions that impact the wider school environment. These roles help build confidence and prepare students for life beyond school, equipping them with the qualities needed for further education, future careers, and active citizenship.

Whether they are helping to run events, supporting younger students, promoting student voice, encouraging participation in sport, or leading their Houses in competitions, our student leaders exemplify the values of All Saints. They are role models within the school, and their contributions help create an inclusive, supportive, and vibrant community.

At All Saints, we believe in giving students the opportunity to lead, because when young people are trusted, encouraged, and empowered, they achieve extraordinary things.

Prefects

Students who are appointed to a leadership role take on a variety of responsibilities throughout Year 11, including:

  • Leading the Student Council
  • Supporting break and lunchtime duties
  • Assisting staff teams during Parents’ Evenings
  • Supporting major school events, such as the annual school show
  • Helping at Open Evenings and Options Evenings

These roles give students valuable experience in organisation, communication, teamwork, and service.

Application and Selection Process

Towards the end of Year 10, students are invited to apply for a leadership position by completing an application form. Shortlisted applicants will then prepare for and participate in a formal interview with the Headteacher and Assistant Vice Principal. This process mirrors real‑life recruitment and helps students develop key skills for their future.

Available Leadership Roles

Students may apply for one of the following positions:

  1. Head Students – Applicants who are not selected may be offered the role of Deputy Head Student.
  2. Chair of the Student Council
  3. Prefect

These roles are highly valued within the school community and offer students an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Student Council & Student Voice

The Student Council at All Saints Academy plays a vital role in giving students a voice and strengthening communication between the student body and the Senior Leadership Team. It ensures that students are actively involved in shaping their school experience and contributing to ongoing improvements across the Academy.

How the Student Council Works

Students are elected by their tutor groups to represent their peers and share their views at council meetings. This democratic process encourages student participation and promotes responsibility and leadership within each tutor group.

The council is led by a group of dedicated Year 11 student leaders who chair meetings, coordinate discussions, and help guide the direction of the council’s work.

Meetings

The Student Council meets twice every half term wherever possible. These meetings provide an opportunity to:

  • Discuss ideas and suggestions from students
  • Raise any concerns or issues affecting school life
  • Provide feedback on school initiatives
  • Work collaboratively on projects that benefit the Academy community

Sharing Student Voice

Students who wish to raise a question or highlight an issue can speak to their elected representative, who will bring the matter forward at the next council meeting.

After each meeting, minutes are shared with the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team, who review the points raised and respond accordingly. This ensures that student feedback is acknowledged and considered in decision‑making.

In addition, teachers and senior leaders may ask the council to gather student opinions on specific topics. Representatives will then take these questions back to their tutor groups for discussion before returning their findings to the next meeting.

Sports Leaders

Our Sports Leaders programme offers pupils a fantastic opportunity to develop their confidence, communication, and leadership skills while contributing positively to the wider community.

How to Get Involved

Pupils can join the programme by selecting Sports Leaders as part of their Enrichment options. They will then take part in a structured 9‑week training programme, which culminates in planning and delivering a sports event for local primary school pupils.

What Students Learn

Throughout the programme, Sports Leaders:

  • Build confidence in communication and teamwork
  • Develop leadership skills by motivating and supporting others
  • Gain experience in planning and organising events
  • Learn responsibility and independence through hands‑on leadership tasks

These skills not only support their personal growth but also help prepare them for future education, employment, and community roles.

Working With Our Community

All Saints Academy hosts multiple primary sports events each academic year and also supports external events held off‑site. Trained Sports Leaders are selected to assist with these activities at various points throughout the year, giving them real‑world experience and the chance to make a meaningful contribution to younger pupils across our community.

House Leaders

Our House Leaders play an important role in shaping the culture and community spirit of All Saints Academy. Each team contributes to school life in a meaningful way, developing valuable leadership skills while making a positive difference to the Academy and the wider community.

Green Team – Sustainability Leaders

The Green Team is dedicated to improving the Academy’s sustainability and environmental awareness. These student leaders take responsibility for promoting greener habits across the school and help ensure that All Saints continues to reduce its environmental impact.

Their work includes:

  • Raising awareness of eco‑friendly practices through campaigns, posters, and tutor‑time activities
  • Coordinating “clean‑up” initiatives, such as litter‑picking sessions and recycling drives
  • Supporting energy‑saving projects, like switching off lights or reducing waste in key areas
  • Helping run events linked to national campaigns such as Earth Day or Recycling Week

By taking part, students learn teamwork, problem‑solving, and project‑management skills while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable school environment.

Media Team – Reporting and Communications Leaders

The Media Team is responsible for photographing, documenting, and reporting on the many events and activities that take place at All Saints Academy. Their work helps celebrate student achievements and showcases the vibrant life of our school community.

Their work includes:

  • Capturing photos and footage at school productions, sports fixtures, celebrations, and special events
  • Writing articles and reports for inclusion in our termly and annual newsletters
  • Helping gather student stories and quotes to highlight the wide range of experiences at All Saints
  • Supporting the creation of content for school displays and digital platforms

Being part of the Media Team offers students an excellent opportunity to develop skills in journalism, photography, communication, and digital media. Skills that are highly valuable for future study and careers. It also gives students a platform to express creativity and take pride in representing their school.
