Imperial War Museum Trip

As part of our Religious Education curriculum, a group of our students recently visited the Imperial War Museum in London to deepen their understanding of conflict, persecution, moral responsibility, and the impact of human choices on society. The visit provided an important opportunity to explore themes that lie at the heart of Religious Education—ethics, human behaviour, suffering, resilience, and the importance of standing up for what is right.

During their visit, students explored several powerful exhibitions, including:

The Holocaust Exhibition

Students walked through a deeply moving and carefully curated exhibition documenting the rise of antisemitism, the persecution of Jewish communities, and the systematic destruction carried out by the Nazi regime. Through survivors’ testimonies, original artefacts, photographs, and personal stories, they gained a clearer understanding of the human consequences of prejudice, discrimination, and unchecked hatred.

Second World War Galleries

Students also spent time exploring the museum’s award‑winning Second World War Galleries, which span two floors and feature over 1,500 original collection items. These galleries bring to life the experiences of millions affected across the world—from London to Russia, China, New Zealand, and beyond—through personal stories, unseen artefacts, and multimedia displays.

What Students Took Away

Through both exhibitions, students developed:

  • A stronger understanding of how conflict shapes society and individual lives.
  • Insight into moral responsibility and the consequences of human choices.
  • Greater empathy through learning about real people’s experiences in times of persecution and war.
  • A clearer connection between historical events and the ethical themes studied in Religious Education.

The Imperial War Museum continues to stand as a powerful educational environment, dedicated to preserving stories, encouraging critical thinking, and helping young people reflect on the importance of compassion, justice, and remembrance.
